Marking the Day
2021
The small date stamp often seen on photographs from old film cameras is created by use of a miniature projector inside the back of the camera.
This photograph taken via a drone is the opposite. The large scale date is not a light projection, but a physical construction and was created by an absence of light. Road plates often used to protect grass form heavy machinery were placed in the form of the date and used to block the sun, stopping the process of photosynthesis. Thus reducing the obscured grass to a contrasting yellow colour. The process of initiating the grass date began ten days before 6th October 2021, the opening date of Ostrava's Cuckoo Festival. The date, captured in the photo, will remain but gradually fade over a couple of weeks and will be completely gone before the festival ends.
